Josh Tutwiler served six years as Assistant Coach and Director of Baseball Operations at VCU. During his time at VCU, the Rams posted four 34-plus win seasons. During his time with the Rams, he was part of a staff that led VCU to two Atlantic-10 Regular Season Championship titles. Since Tutwiler joined the staff in 2016, VCU produced an All-American, five selections to ABCA East-Regional Teams, three Freshman All-Americans, and 17 All Atlantic-10 honorees. In addition, Tutwiler helped produce seven athletes that are currently playing in the MLB system, including four MLB Draft picks.

 

Tutwiler joined the Rams after spending the previous three seasons with Williams & Mary.

In 2015, he helped the Tribe to the program's third consecutive CAA Baseball Tournament, which is tied for the longest streak in program history. Under his guidance, six Tribe baseball players were selected to All-Colonial Athletic Association Awards, including juniors Charley Gould and Ryan Hissey, who earned first-team honors. Gould also received national recognition as a semifinalist for the Dick Howser trophy. Hissey was also a 14th round selection of the Toronto Blue Jays in the MLB Draft.

 

In his second season with the Tribe, Tutwiler continued to aid the growth of the program. He helped the club reach 34 victories, its third straight 30-plus win season, and the first Colonial Athletic Association title in program history. In addition, the Tribe advanced to the CAA title game for the second straight season. As a team, the Tribe batted .310 and led the country with 149 doubles. The Green and Gold also ranked among the top in the country in runs (452), homers (55), and RBIs (402). Individually, he helped tutor junior Michael Katz to a breakout season, in which he also received national recognition as a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes award, while garnering numerous All-American honors. The Tribe also had 11 players recognized with All-Conference awards including Katz, who was the CAA Player of the Year. Katz along with Nick Thompson and Ryan Lindemuth each inked professional contracts following the regular season. In the summer, he coached for the 2014 Jim Lineweaver Cup Champion Waynesboro Generals in the Valley Baseball League.

 

During his first season at William & Mary, Tutwiler helped the Green and Gold to its most successful season in school history. The Tribe won a school-record 39 games, garnered its first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and won its first-ever NCAA Tournament games.

 

Tutwiler played collegiately at Old Dominion, earning All-CAA accolades as a catcher. In his final season, he led the Monarchs in home runs, slugging percentage, and walks. The catcher played a large part in leading ODU to a second-place regular season and CAA tournament finish in 2011. Following the season, he played summer ball for the Staunton Braves of the Valley League, where he was awarded team Offensive MVP after leading the squad in numerous categories. Tutwiler also led the league in throwing out potential base-stealers. 

 

Prior to ODU, Tutwiler played at Jackson State Community College, where he earned Academic All-American honors in 2010. Before that, he spent his first two years of college playing ball at St. John's University in Queens, N.Y. There, he was a member of the Red Storm's Big East Championship team in 2008.

 

Tutwiler graduated from Old Dominion in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy of Religious Studies. He also received his Master of Education degree in Sport Leadership from VCU's Center for Sport Leadership in 2017.
